Lamb of God - Christine Nichols

The Lord has given me a few mysterious "portrait" paintings through the years and I count, "The Lamb of God" as one of them. I say mysterious because I have never intentionally painted a portrait in my life. Faces are not my forte, believe me, but that has not stopped Father God's purpose from going forth.

This piece was painted in 2010, and although I lost my detailed artists notes for the paintings, I do remember the Holy Spirit choosing the paint colors and instructing me how to apply them to the canvas diagonally to achieve the diamond shape in the center. The face in the center of the diamond was achieved by applying paint and lifting it off. I remember that I was totally surprised to see an image, which to me, looks like a lamb. An abstract lamb, but a lamb none the less! What do you see?

Jesus Christ is referred to as the “Lamb of God” in the Bible. This symbol points to Christ being a perfect sacrifice for sin. It also conveys His meekness and His willingness to submit to suffering and death. Here's a passage of Scripture from John 1 when John - the Baptist, and Jesus met for the first time:

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ³¹ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
³² And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. ³³ I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

The Apostle Paul spoke of Jesus as "Christ, our Passover Lamb" in 1 Corinthians 5:7

The Apostle Peter said of Jesus:
^" ...but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." 1 Peter 1:19

In the book of Revelation, Jesus Christ is the glorious Lamb:

• The Lamb is worthy Rev 5:8-12 See also Rev 7:9-10; Rev 15:3
• The Lamb is upon the throne Rev 17:14 See also Rev 5:6; Rev 7:17; Rev 22:1-3
• The Lamb will execute judgment Rev 6:16 See also Rev 6:1-3; Rev 14:10
• The Lamb is the Bridegroom of the Church Rev 19:7-9 See also Rev 21:9

The Greatest Commandment

Love the Lord your God - Christine Nichols

You may ask what this painting has do with the Greatest Commandment in the Bible. The answer is found in Mark 12:28-34. You see, after I had finished this piece, I stepped back to look at the painting and wondered what it meant and the Holy Spirit said, "Love the Lord your God."

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked Him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
²⁹ “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. ³⁰ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’^{[Deut. 6:4-5] 31} The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’^{[Leviticus 19:18]} There is no commandment greater than these.”
³² “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but Him. ³³ To love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
³⁴ When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask Him any more questions. Mark 12:28-34

In the painting, I see the large gold heart representing our love for God. It is our first love, which is above all other loves, for Christ is to be first in our hearts and in our lives. The two smaller dark blue hearts symbolize our love for one another. The painting also symbolizes heaven touching earth through the power of God's love. 

This morning as I was contemplating how to write this blog (which I've been doing for more than a week) I looked at the painting and between the sunlight and the angle, the gold was shining brightly - much brighter than the photograph. I took this as confirmation that the gold heart and the "markings" were important to the overall meaning of the painting. Some folks see the upper left marking as a question mark. Others see it as the number seven. I see it as the Hebrew Letter Vav which confirms the heaven and earth connection. 

Here's an excerpt from Hebrews for Christians that explains the meaning of the Hebrew letter Vav:

The letter Vav is the sixth letter of the Aleph-Bet, having the numeric value of six. The pictograph for Vav looks like a tent peg, whereas the classical Hebrew script (ketav Ashurit) is constructed of a vertical line and conjoined Yod. The meaning of the word vav is "hook," as a connecting hook used when the mishkan (tabernacle) was assembled.

The first Vav in the Torah occurs in Genesis 1:1:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The placement of the Vav suggests two of its essential connective powers:

• By joining heaven and earth () it implies the connection between spiritual and earthly matters.
   
• Since it occurs as the 22nd letter in the Torah attached to the sixth word, (et), it alludes to the creative connection between all of the letters. Vav is therefore the connecting force of the God, the divine "hook" that binds together heaven and earth.

I found it interesting that when I read another Christian artist's blog today, bringing heaven to earth was a definition of Prophetic Art. The blog was called Faith Colors by Lula Adams. 

A word from the Lord about prophetic art:
It is a way to bring heaven to earth…
To plant seeds of faith through vision…
It shows My face to the world. Just as music touches the soul, art reaches into the soul and stirs My love and mercy.

Prophetic art is done in union with Me, and My blessings shine forth from it. It speaks to the heart, where I dwell. In prophetic art, I connect with the artist who produces a good work, a good deed in art. What is a good deed but a demonstration of my love? My art is a demonstration of My love, an expression of mercy and grace.

Let Me stir my answer in your art.
Let Me stir passion in you.
Let worship come from deep places in your heart. To praise God’s glory is to spark life into you. To use art to express worship is to share worship. Sing into art and watch it stir up living water.

In all of my art blog posts, I encourage everyone to seek their own personal interpretation from the Holy Spirit concerning the artwork. Usually the Lord tells me what the painting is about and He did with this painting in giving me the title, but I was stuck on the symbolism. I asked some friends to seek the Holy Spirit's interpretation and it deepened my understanding of the painting. Here's a few of their interpretations. When they mention the question mark or the number 7, it's in reference to the upper left gold marking. 

• Heaven touching earth through the power of love.
• The question mark like shape on the left intrigues me, I'm not sure what to make of it in comparison to the rest, which I agree is about love and heaven touching earth, at least at the moment..
• All our questions are answered with His love.  
• I like that. After reading what you wrote, it came to me. Instead of "his" love, it would be "their" love. The triangles meaning "Father, Son and Holy Spirit".
• This is the calling inside of a person. Of course I see it as the call on a woman's life. I see the shape of her body with the heart in the middle. The multiple hearts are the adornment on the dress she is wearing and also represent the love on the inside of her. Her heart is carrying the love of Jesus to the nations. The nations are represented in the bottom triangle, also the bottom of her dress. The yellow coming from the top of the dress or top triangle are the adornments of the Holy Spirit flowing through the woman. The blue is the sky, the ocean, the world. There is no limit to where we go when we are called to this mission of delivering the love of Jesus.
• the two red triangles connected represents the sands of time. when sin is in our lives our time is running out. but because of the grace of God, Jesus covers our sin. therefore our time never ends. we will live forever because we have a relationship with our Father and he loves us so much and he forgives all our sins. oh I didn't think of it it as a ?. to me look more like a 7. and seven means completeness. the dot was just the balance of the other dot on the other side. so along with what I was saying earlier. 7 means complete. was Jesus washing our sins with his blood we are complete. all the dots in the swooshings is all the mystery behind that. 
  
  
  • The first thing that came to mind was "on earth as it is in heaven".
  • Mountains and Valleys: interesting how the two mets or how their connected...the two seasons of our lives...both are needed, both lead to deeper revelation of His love
  • I see two main things: 1) an hour glass, measuring time til Jesus' return. The hearts are love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for us, the Bride. You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times." Matthew 16:3 2) a goblet, drink from His cup. The cup of red wine is symbolic of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ "In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 1Corinthians 11:25 The sky reference is about people desiring signs. red skies in the morning ..purrhos is greek for red like fire. In the Bible, (Matthew XVI: 2-3,) Jesus said, “When in evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: For the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering.”
  • I saw the hourglass as well and thought of the eternality of God and timelessness we are destined to live in forever with him. I see his parameters in which we are carried in the endless ocean of His love and anchored to his cross/covered in every
  way by his blood sacrifice - the ins and outs and ups and downs of our journey are extraordinary - carried in His arms of love and living out our enlightened destiny thru his multi-purposes means & dreams. His heart of love swallows up any darkness as we meld into oneness with Him. I love his perfection and secure hold!!! Double reinforcement of the Trinity with the two triangles!
  

It truly amazes me how the Lord uses His art to touch people's hearts and impact their lives. In closing, I'd like to return to the title of the painting, "Love the Lord your God" and pray that you do indeed love Him with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind, and with all your strength, and love others as you love yourself. By doing this, you are part of the heaven and earth connection!

Peace! Be Still!

"PEACE! 

BE STILL!" said with commanding voice of authority is how I envision Jesus saying these words when a sudden storm hit the boat He and the disciples were sailing in one evening.

Jesus Calms the Storm

As evening came, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with His head on a cushion. The disciples woke Him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Peace! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then He asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey Him!” Mark 4:35-41 NTL

I've read this story in the Bible many times - it's one of my favorites, but this was the first I noticed that the disciples were SHOUTING at Jesus to save them! The thought just occurred to me that they had to shout to be heard above the roaring wind. NIV says there was a "squall" which is a sudden, violent gust of wind that brings rain. Can you imagine what that furious gust of wind did to the waves? It's no wonder the boat was filling with water! The disciples were sea-worthy men, some of them fishermen by trade and they would know, by experience, whether a storm on the sea was dangerous or not so it must have been one heck of a squall for them to fear for their very lives! 

The other thing I noticed was the huge contrast when Jesus rebuked the violent wind and the high, choppy waves with just three words, PEACE. BE STILL. And it was very still. Most translations say there was a "GREAT CALM." The Message says, "The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass." The storm didn't just naturally subside - as in the wind died down and the waves became smaller, both the wind and the waves obeyed Christ's words EXACTLY and IMMEDIATELY! No wind. No waves.  

"Peace. Be still."

Studying this Scripture passage, I found this commentary by Jamieson-Fausset-Brown who noted that "Israel has all along been singing of Jehovah, 'Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, Thou stillest them!' 'The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea!' (Ps 89:9; 93:4). But, lo, in this very boat of ours is One of our own flesh and blood, who with His word of command hath done the same! Exhausted with the fatigues of the day, He was but a moment ago in a deep sleep, undisturbed by the howling tempest, and we had to waken Him with the cry of our terror; but rising at our call, His majesty was felt by the raging elements, for they were instantly hushed- 'What Manner of Man is this?'" 

Can you answer that question? Who do you say Jesus Christ is?

Reconciled Love

The Ministry of Reconciliation

Reconciled Love has the longest working history to date of more than one hundred paintings the Lord has given me. It was created in stages over a span of three years. The first stage was completed by prepping a 2 x 3' piece of plywood and painting layers of mint green, soft lavender, and iridescent gold then moving my hand with a large putty knife diagonally across the board like gentle waves rippling on the sea. I waited for more instructions, none came, but the Lord spoke the words, "Sea of Glass" over the painting. I was surprised by His words as I've always found that name in the Book of Revelation intriguing, but I never envisioned it like the abstract I had just done.

The second stage of the painting happened two years later, at an art workshop hosted by First Love in Le Sueur, Minnesota. The Holy Spirit had prompted me to take the "Sea of Glass" painting to the workshop. Before beginning to paint again, I prayed over the painting and sought the Lord's guidance on how to proceed. The Holy Spirit lead me to draw a heart and then added the swirly lines in hues of dark crimson, gold, purple and white directly from small paint bottles. Applying paint to piece in this manner was a first for me. It sort of had a Jackson Pollock look to it, but more refined than his famous abstract style.

Although the painting had multiple layers, a background, foreground and showed motion, it still didn't seem done to me and so I waited upon the Lord again. In the interim, God lead me to Digital Art as a new medium for the prophetic art. Just as in acrylic painting with a canvas and a brush, the Holy Spirit guides me through creative steps on the computer to achieve artwork that glorifies God and sends forth a message of His love. In fact, the Lord has been combining the acrylic art with digital to create new or finished pieces of art. Reconciled Love is a classic example of this collaborative media.

The last step began shortly after the art workshop with a supernatural yearning for the colors of rose magenta, crimson and vermilion. The color combination touched something deep within me and would not let me go! The color obsession mystery was solved several months later when the Holy Spirit lead me to digitally enhance a photograph of the sea-of-glass-heart-swirly painting. (That's a mouthful!) I could hardly believe my eyes when the green, purple and gold hues changed to the very colors I craved for months! The Lord showed me the name for the painting by leading me to Romans 5:1-11 and 2 Corinthians 5:11-21, both of which deals with God's love through reconciliation in Christ Jesus. Reconciled Love.

The Ministry of Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.

We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God! 21 God made Him who had no sin to be sin[or be a sin offering] for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 

Romans 5:5-11

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Refiner's Fire

When a goldsmith purifies metals, the process includes fire to heat the metal to a liquid state and then remove dross which is solid impurities floating on a molten metal. Scripture speaks of the same type of process God uses to purify His people through trials and hardships. Peter, the disciple and apostle of Jesus puts it this way: "In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. ⁷ These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." 1 Peter 1:6-7

But who can endure the day of His coming? Who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a REFINER'S FIRE or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a REFINER and purifier of silver; He will purify the Levites and REFINE them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

Malachi 3:2-4

"This third I will put into the FIRE;

I will REFINE them like silver

and test them like gold.

They will call on My Name

and I will answer them;

I will say, ‘They are My people,’

and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.” Zechariah 13:9

This painting went through a process of refinement as well including multiple paint layers, a covering, a dousing, and the final top layer of paint which is how the tie-dye effect was achieved on a 2'x4' canvas. Here's photographs of the creative process...

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! You Name It

I asked a Facebook group of Christian Prophetic Artists what the Holy Spirit spoke to them about this painting. The comments were many and greatly varied but three themes stood out: 

• The Lord's presence
• Worship
• Washing/Cleansing

I can see all three, but it mainly looks like a small snapshot of continuous praise to me as if the entire painting is too expansive to capture on earth and it goes on perpetually in breadth and length, depth and height, just as Christ's love for us is described in Ephesians 3. Perhaps the reason I perceive this piece in such a way is because found this gem as a photograph of the creative process, but I fully feel it is a piece of art on it's own merit.

 

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,¹⁵ from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, ¹⁶ that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, ¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, ¹⁸ may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— ¹⁹ to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

²⁰ Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, ²¹ to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:14-21

The Ultimate Sacrifice 

The Ultimate Sacrifice is a series of two images taken from one painting entitled, Believe.

12x12 Canvas, Acrylic

I began painting the 12x12 canvas in a church I was attending in 2009. The Holy Spirit choose the hues of sky blue with wisps of white and and dabs of red and directed the movement of the paintbrush as such. At one point, I was told by the Spirit to paint the number seven (7) on the canvas. The pastor of the church walked by and saw the seven in the middle of canvas. We talked about how seven represents perfection in the Bible. A short time later, the Holy Spirit told me to place a paper towel layer over the wet canvas. I obeyed and lightly patted the paper towels like a mother gently comforting her infant child. Carefully lifting up the paper towel, I laid it down to dry and stared at the image that had been lifted up from the canvas.

The pastor walked by again and I asked him what he saw. He said, "Christ being taken down off the cross." I needed the confirmation because I had NOT painted an image of Christ or a cross. Just the number seven. I knew that a miracle had taken place. I was a bit shaken, but the Lord wasn't done yet. He compelled me to continue painting. Again, I obeyed and began painting as the Spirit lead, adding layers of paint and movement. Eventually, the movement turned into swirls of paint like a red ribbon weaving across and down the canvas. For the second time, the Lord told me to place a layer of paper towels over the wet canvas. I wondered what would happen this time as I followed His instructions.

Lifting up the paper towel, I saw three separate images - again, none that I had painted. The top image represents the Lord's body as if it was tightly wrapped and laying on a slab in a tomb. If you look closely, you will even see the imprint of eyes, nose and a mouth. The middle image is Christ sitting up in the tomb. The third is a pile of His burial cloths and He is gone! The resurrection of Jesus Christ!! 

I would never presume to paint such a scene of Christ being taken down from the cross or of His blessed resurrection. I consider both "lifted up" images to be miracles. There is no other explanation.

It wasn't until I bought the images and canvas home that the Lord instructed me to paint the word, "Believe"in gold on the canvas and gave me the Scripture verse, Romans 10:9. "If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

Painting Stages:

The painting began with splotches of purple and blue on the canvas followed by vertical and horizontal brush strokes. Then symbols of a bird, heart, circle, an "X" or a cross on it's side with a squiggle showing the horizon, and Hebrew letters: Alef, Dalet (backwards) and Yod were added in gold.

Since Hey is formed from Dalet and Yod, it can also be a picture of returning to God by means of the transforming power of the Spirit. Dalet stands for brokenness, and Yod stands for a hand. Opening the door of the heart then is a picture of the Spirit of God indwelling the believer, and this image also coheres with the idea that part of Aleph (God) is joined with Dalet to form the Hey. The number 11 could be written as Yod-Alef, Alef-Yod, Heh-Vav, Dalet-Dalet-Gimmel or many other combinations of letters. 

We love each other because He loved us first. 

1 John 4:19

The gold was spread across the canvas with horizontal brush strokes. Gold represents the divine nature of God., His GLORY! The Bible also takes about being "refined as gold." Blue means faithfulness, Heaven and the Holy Spirit. Purple represents royalty. Jesus is the King of Glory and King of Kings!

Red painted was sprayed over the canvas. Red represents the precious and powerful blood of Jesus, It is His ransom for our sins. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow."   Isaiah 1:18

We all know that hearts mean love. Believers of Christ Jesus are to love one another as He loves us to show the world that we are His followers. This is NOT a suggestion or request. It is a NEW COMMAND FROM JESUS!

Horizontal brush strokes blur the lines of individual hearts. Where does one begin and another end? "Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other." Romans 12:4-5

The Holy Spirit lead me to place plastic wrap over the painting and then lift it off. This technique of lifting off wet paint created the effect you see below.

The finished painting is an abstract with compelling eyes (do you see them?) reminding us to SIMPLY LOVE as the Lord loves us. This prophetic art was inspired and lead by the Holy Spirit. I believe there is a specific message that He wants me to tell. There is also an individual message from God to you. Pause and ask Him for your personal interpretation and insight.

WHAT IS LOVE?

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. 

1 Corinthians 13:4-7,13

Love means doing what God has commanded us, and He has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.
